Re: HT550 - 2024

So so far only 13 scratches - lowest rate ever and joint second lowest number - 2016 was the lowest number but only 50 odd riders versus 63.

And the weather has been less than optimal - more scratched last year and it was wall to wall sunshine!

Re: Lightweight MTB shoes

Cheers Johnny - no trailcrosses in my size cheap but a couple of places doing them for £70 in my size.

Simon, I's also ID'd the bonty's. Speshes have always been too narrow for me plus trying to avoid boas as I hate them....

I guess I'm looking at it in terms of picking up a Dakota or Etrex touch cheap off ebay, and a Spot cheap off here!

Lightweight MTB shoes

I'm after a pair of summer mtb shoes as the five ten Kestrels I got cheap last year are far too stiff.

Must be bendy, spd type, fairly light, a good chunky sole for walking, wide-ish, laces.

And cheap obviously
Any recommendations welcome

Re: HT550 - 2024

I was up my local hills earlier looking north west at a sun drenched Ben More and Ben Lui - I strongly suspect that Allan is making the most of the lovely weather :-bd

He's just approaching the bonus climb which is a PIA but you get a nice view back to where you've just been

Re: HT550 - 2024

Lee's record shouldn't really apply to this route so Kerry's will stand I'd say What makes this version harder? Is going to Poolewe much slower than the postman's path? Other than that is there much difference? We could say Neil's record shouldn't apply to this route... but it's been beaten 2 years...

Re: HT550 - 2024

Looks like Alex Berry has scratched - his dot is no longer on the map, the last ping was around Clunes, the ticker board shows him scratching around 2200 last night but the riders list isn't showing him at all. Tyre and spoke issues means he's out. A shame as he's got to get to Ft William anyway an...

Re: HT550 - 2024

Alex next, then Allan! Shaff, it took me 3 days 5 hrs from Suileg to Tyndrum in 2015 - that was on a 2hour longer route in horrible weather and with an early finish on the second night. My bet will be he'll stay in Sheneval bothy in Fisherfield tomorrow night, Dornie public loo Thursday night, Somew...

Re: West highland way

Whilst the WHW does have it's moments, the section alongside Loch Lomond is definitely type 2 and it is all busy with walkers. The Cairngorms tour is a lot nicer and sees very little other traffic away from the honey pots. So do the WHW for the challenge of 'doing' it. But plenty of better routes ou...

Lee Craigie - 3D 20H 53M I think this edition is longer though? 560 miles vs 536 in 2018 miles, is that right? Hey Chris! Yup Lee Craigies record was on the 'easy' version (irony) which was just shy of ...

Re: Brakes; mechanical or hydraulic?

I have the Juintech GTPs on one of my bikes, they work really well, not quite full hydro but nicer than BB7s and easier to set up. Only issue I'm wary of (but haven't experienced) is that with a small reservoir of hydraulic fluid they may be more prone to overheating that full hydros. Probably only...

Re: Brakes; mechanical or hydraulic?

Has anyone tried both i.e those Juin tech brakes that have a cable actuated hydraulic caliper? My (drop bar) TRP's are getting a bit dicky and new ones cost a fortune so I was thinking of giving the Juin techs a whirl.

Re: HT550 - 2024

Pace seems generally high - lots of people have cleared the northern loop whereas previously you see the most traffic about now. Looks like Alex did stop for 3hrs at Shenevall bothy, but even with that he took just 10 1/2 hours from Inverbroom to Poolewe! Took me 8 1/2 none stop :???: Anyone know wh...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024

Bonus BAM! A mate who I'd not seen for a while was throwing a do at his Highland Estate (500 acres) so I figured on pedaling (note spelling Reg!) up Friday eve and Saturday morning. The forecasted damp day on Friday wasn't and I confidently predicted the deluge to start when I left but in actual fac...

Re: HT550 - 2024

Just catching up. Alex M did the northern bit in 3 1/2 hours after going all through the night so that's pretty good going. I suspect he'll stop tonight for a bit... His speed will run him into thunder storms through Fisherfield tomorrow! Bob, Tom Bruce has the fastest time on the Ledmore traverse ...
