Re: Lifesystems Venture Solo Bivi and others?
I've never been wholly convinced by hooped bivvies - if it's raining when you get in, the rain is coming in with you and if it gets wet, it won't breathe. If you are going ultra minimalist then a straight bivvy bag is probably not much wetter. 'Pends what your after. My DCF flat tarp / borah bivvy s...

Re: Bug repellant
Nah, for camp - in fact more likely when camping off the motorbike where I tend to spend more time lazing around on a campsite.
That said, I had a couple of mosquito horrors in 2022 so I might take it with me on certain bike trips also.

Re: Goldilocks - first completion.
SS is ideal for that route as you're either going up a huge steep climb (and pushing) or going down a huge steep descent for which SS is fab. Or pushing across a tussock fest.

Re: Frame bag hydration hose solutions
I spent years with the hose wrapped and granny knotted round the GPS mount - fine with the RAM mount but not with the standard garmin.... After much fannying around I tied a bit of elastic chord round the front of the loops (bars that is) with a dangly bit - I feed the hose through this loop and rou...

https://www.instagram.com/p/C6eg8LMMBZr/?igsh=eXNwNGtiZ2p3bWE0 One of Europe's biggest events was cancelled yesterday due to heavy rain in north east Cataluña, 700 odd disappointed riders. I think the pic above about sums it up. I see that bikepacking is banging on about this. 2019 Highland Trail -...

Hi Rich
I've some 'funn full on' risers spare - 30mm rise by the looks and 785 wide. Usual sweep - probably 11 degree back sweep and 5 degree up sweep I'd say. Any use?
Cheers
Phil

Re: What is ádventure?
Adventure requires an element of the unknown, there are no guarantees. Wanna climb the Eiger N Face with me this summer? I got some spare gear and the route looks easy to get started on. Adventure guaranteed! Something about adventure being a lack of planning.. :) But yeah.. pre-packaged adventure ...

Re: Lael Wilcox off round the world
Lael herself comments at one point how a number of countries are off limits to her as an American..... Any student of history over the last 60 years would have no trouble understanding why that might be the case. Oh well, if she just is promoting it as a bike ride, seeing lots of different places an...

Seems to be trying to do as many miles in Europe and the States as possible, given that the former USSR is off limits. Also happy to bag plenty of alpine passes....

Re: What is ádventure?
I'm fairly relaxed about this one - anytime you venture away from the built environment under your own steam anything might happen = adventure. Burn him! Do we really need another pointless definition thread? And yes, I know I could just ignore it   I'm also fairly cynical about p...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
Some quality bivvies this month, well done all :-bd Neil, glad you found the ideal shelter. 'A' pitches get a lot of love on here as they are quick and simple and are a bit more resistant to wind and rain blustering about. I think there are a couple of poles on the classified at the mo. I bought a F...

Re: Wildlife
Spot of big game hunting for me today.... I'd noted the patter of little feet (and a smattering of droppings) in the kitchen of late, so pulled out the humane trap but decided not to bait it last night as I wouldn't have time to deal with a distressed mouse this morning. In any case it's been 100% u...

Re: What you done t' your bike today
Got it out of the garage for the first time in a month and dug around the garage in prep for the WRT. It looks like we have a mouse because it’s eaten a hole in my wildcat drybag which happened to be in an open box with some energy bars that have also all been nibbled. Little bleeders, twice I've h...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
Enjoyed that Phil. Would be a bit un-nerving coming across those mannequins in the dark though, especially after a few beers. "Greetings madam. May I interest you in an evening of fun and frolics?". As I approached, the first thing I saw was a tumbledown shed which I instantly pegged as a...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2024
April... Still no Cairngorm trip as it was looking like winter would be having another go up there. So instead I went with another tour of the fair Kingdom of Fife. Last August I did the southern bit of the coastal path out (well about half of it) and an inland route back. This time I went with the ...

Re: West highland 550
I have 4 days in early May, so planning to 'enthusiastically tour' the Western portion from Fort William to Tarbet. I only really know the bit around Dunoon, from the Dirt Dash, and some very midgey camping on Ardnamurchan, so keen to explore. Though if the weather looks great, I'm going hill walki...

Re: Radar/Camera/Rear light
I was eyeing up the specs of the Garmin light, and reading the blurb. I get what they are trying to do but my considerable experience is that people squeeze past you too close because they are dicks, not because they haven't seen you. Being warned of this doesn't really add any value as there is typ...
