Re: The Cuillin Ridge

My goodness. As soon as Chris Akrigg started appearing on the interblurps I enjoyed his videos more than MacAskills. More fluidity, more biking, less trial. Skill wise, well they both have their place but what Danny has displayed in Imaginate has blown my mind. Yet I still missed him kicking it off ...

You mean the pouring rain and nearly getting washed away in that river crossing wasn't enough for you? What about the wind? ... Actually I don't mind we didn't encounter thigh high ferns. We had the bungalow high wind fallen trees on day one instead... you're right, I might have gotten what I came ...

Re: My open ended ride...

Beautiful stuff here. Keep it up :-bd I realise, not for the first time, that I often think that people are thinking the worst of me. Those looks of disapproval that I saw were in fact looks of genuine curiosity and ended up in a lovely conversation. Nothing wrong with some rider trash (as in hiker ...

Re: Quilt Questions (again)

PHD Testing Fillpower is the prime indicator of down quality. It establishes the volume which a measured weight of down will fill — the fillpower — usually quoted in cubic inches per ounce. So when people talk about 700, 800, 900 down, they mean how many cubic inches one ounce of that down will fil...

Re: Quilt Questions (again)

Using a similar/same pattern for chambers, same material, same down, you're looking into getting equal isolation out of a 150 g quilt and a 200 g bag. BUT, you have no hood. Below zero that makes a huge difference. So say your looking into swaping against a PHD Minimus with 300 g down, you'd need to...

Re: Hydration Tablets - What Flavours?

Drinking water in larger quantities less frequently aids gastric emptying which helps prevent a build up of excess carbs in the stomach that you can't digest - which is what is making you feel sick. Uh-huh, good to know. This time i'm taking High 5 gels, enough for five a day B'fast, a bar an hour ...

Please people if you aren't used to chowing down on gels don't start at the BB200 The same goes for drinks. A friend and former road pro, now into long road races, gave me the advice for my first endurance event not to experiment with nutrition. I didn't experiment with food, but did use High5 elec...

Re: Rovaniemi 150

Sized at least 1 or 1.5 times bigger than normal with VBL and wool socks or alternatively some thick seal skin socks ( they seem to work like a VBL and wool sock in one). Some things I use(d) for winter mountaineering: A thin neoprene sock (check kayaking gear) will work great as a VBL too. Alumini...

Re: Rovaniemi 150

To those who would like to use SPDs: I use mid high "Supplest" SPD shoes. About 3 sizes too big to accommodate thin polypro socks, VBL and very thick wool socks. They have a soft sole, which I think is the key – you need to be able to move and bend your feet freely in order to keep them wa...

Re: More 'drag' on narrow tyres ... is it possible?

A difference can also be due to using different (or no) tubes, sidewalls etc.
When I changed from butyl to latex tubes on my DH bike I had to adjust the damping. That's how big the difference is...

Re: Not the best BB200 training ride

That's the good thing about that kind of seat post. The weak spot is the bolt.
Two spare bolts for longer trips is all it needs.
It's also a sensible place to check the right torque.

I use Thomson posts on my bikes (except for one that's got a reverb). Expensive but light and reliable.

I bounce around all the time. But I don't like gravel roads and hate, deeply detest tarmac. Bring on technical and rough single tracks! At the moment it's a BMC Speedfox SF29. Loved it on the multi day trips in the UK. Only thing I should have changed long time ago is the front travel, from 100 to 1...

Light weight and bulk up front. Not more than 1 kg for me. I can't stand the feeling of even an additional ounce on the bars.
Weight in the frame or out back. I try to pack the saddle bag in such a way, that I can move freely around the saddle.
