Re: Quilts Recommendations please

I got a 250 quilt from Cumulus last year, I hadn’t used a quilt before and am a convert. I find it comfier than a bag, and lighter and cheaper than the equivalent bag. I’d recommend Cumulus too - great value and good to deal with.

Re: sleeping system .....sleeping bag and, say, down jacket

On my January BAM I took a Cumulus 250 which is a 2 season quilt. I took a Rab down vest and a PHD waferlite pullover (very light but only as warm as a fleece top). I wore them both when sleeping, temperature got down to about 1deg, and I was warm enough and comfortable. I just used a tarp, not a te...

Re: Bivvy a month 2018.

1/12 for 2018 in the bag. I had plans for a long ride out from home for this one but grown-up responsibilities got in the way... I had to settle for a brief trip out up onto Chinley Churn (about 5 miles of easy riding with a steep climb/push at the end). I didn't really have a bivvy spot in mind but...

Peak advice please

I've been attempting Bivvy a Month this year and got one in every month except August due to last minute work problems  Anyway, they have all been based in and around the Peak cos that's where I live and I wondered if you lot had any suggestions for 'under cover' bivvy spots? I've stayed at Low...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

November bivvy complete. I managed to stay warm but had a restless night, not helped by some alarming screeching birds! Tarp and outside of bivvy bag very icy this morning but my new downmat did a good job.
Up at 5 for the short ride home avoiding some big ice patches.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

November bivvy under way. Snugged down near Mellor Cross with stars, a full moon, owls hooting and some hot chocolate. Feeling warm at the moment but a bit worried about how I'll feel in a couple of hours time...

I saw a Lancaster flying down the Derwent Valley once. I looked down on it from Whinstone Lee Tor. Fantastic sight.

Ah, right. Slightly disappointed it wasn't a Lancaster - I could only see a vague outline, but quite atmospheric nonetheless.

Re: Bothy ghosts

I was on a trip through Knoydart at Easter, many years back with a mate. We'd stayed in bothies, A'Chuil, Sourlies, and on our way out to the station at Glenfinnan we stayed at Oban Bothy, next to Loch Morar. It was just the two of us, and was one of those times when you get an uneasy feeling about ...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Another Friday after work BAM for me. As I enjoyed the last bivvy in the shelter/barn above Ladybower so much I went back again. I took a different route, a few more hills this time as I was riding something with more than one gear and a vaguely functioning suspension fork. The first hour or so was ...

Re: The price of stuff.

Alpinum's points are totally valid, but he lives and rides in a world that I don't. I suspect that his experiences and skill set represent a tiny fraction of those mountain bikers that buy these £5k+ bikes that we are talking about. Those bikes aren't really aimed at hard riding, skilled and dedicat...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Bad news from August - I failed miserably on my last opportunity due to work hassles. 7 out of 7 up til then on my first BAM attempt. Anyhow, September rolls round, I get away from work on Friday afternoon nice and early and have a steady ride out into the Peak. I end up climbing up and over Whinsto...

One more question.
It looks like Claerddu has a gas cooker. Is this reliable and can I leave my stove at home?

Trans Cambrian Way advice

I'm thinking of riding the TCW one weekend in October. I've never ridden this area so have a couple of questions. I'd like to do it over 2 days with a stop at Claerddu bothy which is about half way. What's the easiest route in to the bothy on a bike? Cross country from the nearest point on the road ...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Another last minute doorstep bivvy on 27th July. I headed out from home after work for an easy ride up through Hayfield and onto the slopes above Kinder Reservoir to a spot in Broad Clough I'd earmarked a while back. It looked really scenic but the reality was loads of midges and very lumpy ground! ...

Sleeping Mat advice

Hi folks I've been thinking about upgrading my sleeping mat for the colder months (I know it's only July...) I use a Thermarest Neoair and have been cold on it in the winter months. I need something that'll be good for winter bivvying typically in the Peak District/Lakes. Needs to be compact, light ...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

A last minute one due to family commitments interfering with my plans earlier in the month. I met up with a mate for a couple of hours evening riding from Hope in the Peak. Ride completed, back at the car I loaded the bike up and headed off along the road to Edale and up the climb towards Jaggers Cl...

I'm sat up on Win Hill above Hope watching the lights come on in the valley. Beautiful clear, warm evening. Bivvy bag and tarp set up. Planning to be up early tomorrow and in work for 7.

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

4 out of 4 for me. Friday morning i rode the loaded up single speed into work. I got away in the afternoon and headed out towards the Peak District, via a few easy going tracks and trails, with a trip through Roych Clough added in for spice. After passing the Ladybower reservoirs I headed up the Wes...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

Managed to squeeze in a last minute March bivvy on Friday. I rode in to work on my single speed with bags attached, then headed off after work towards the Peak for the evening. I'd heard the terrible news about Mike Hall at lunch time so he was in my thoughts much of the day. I rode with him a bit y...

Re: Bivvy a Month 2017.

My first effort at posting photos... (thanks Sam for the sunset pic) I made the most of the good weather and spent the night at the little hut up on Combs Edge in the Peak with my son Sam. We made a late start and headed up onto the moor in the failing light catching a nice sunset: https://c1.static...
