I'm in!
I'll have moved to Aberystwyth a couple of weeks prior so would be rude not to

Re: What Worked...and What Didn't
On the subject of hydration tablets, I took about 10 individually packaged High5 ones on the HT550 and stowed them in my water bottle. They didn't take up a noticeable amount of space and the water stopped them getting smashed up, plus when I came to need one they were already with the water. I was ...

Re: compatibility woes
I haven't had a problem running 10 and 11 speed cassettes on the same freehub. 11 is a pinch longer, 9/10 speed cassettes need a spacer on an 11 speed freehub. Spline pattern and lockring thread is the same. If you put 9/10 speed cassettes on 11 speed freehub, it won't be tightened in properly - it...

Re: how to recharge light batteries on multiday ride, e.g. H
This is something I thought a lot about before the HT550, then I got it impressively wrong. My front light would run for 6 hours on full brightness (In hindsight, it was totally the wrong light, but the battery life was fine), my phone will run for 2 days at a push and my GPS runs on lithium AA's. A...

The central belter
Anybody planning on being at the mass start for this on September 9th?

Have to say I'm tempted but knowing nothing about the terrain is putting me off for now.

This saved an ordeal on my HT550 the other week when my Garmin decided to stop showing the route at certain zoom levels.
They're fantastic, thanks Dave! :D

I only stayed the night in Fort A because I'd missed the shop and was planning on getting to Fort William for breakfast...

Massive thanks to Howard for convincing me to continue on the morning of the second day when I very nearly scratched and very sorry to hear you had to scratch yourself. My pleasure. You really would have kicked yourself if you'd scratched for no reason. I'm still struggling with my decision - espec...

Re: HT550 - 2017
I finished earlier this evening in just under 6.5 days after my rear mech died between Fort William and Kinlockleven and I had to bodge a (very unreliable) singlespeed setup. Really pleased to have finished as I did given how little training I did and how poorly prepared I was. Massive thanks to How...

Re: HT550 - 2017
That's it Ben. Made slightly more sense when the latter part of the Fisherfield section went out to Poolewe rather than the Postman's Path that the route now uses. Cheers. By my reckoning from the river crossing, back to the road, then along the road is around 50 miles whereas from the river crossi...

It's been raining on and off these past few days. It's possible they've been told the river is high and are opting for the road detour. It's the last place you'd want to be nursing a mechanical or injury though so safer to turn back if in any doubt. Road detour? Have I missed an official alternativ...

A couple of questions on money: How prevalent is the use of cards along the route? Do I need to be taking enough cash for the whole route or do most places accept cards? Does the OBH accept cards? This is an area i've never really been (only really know the area around Fort Bill) so I have truly no ...

Does anyone know the longest distance between resupply off the top of their head?
And also, to save me rooting through emails, are we going clockwise or anti?
As you can tell I'm well prepared with less than 2 weeks to go

Mavics.
I bought some Spesh Rimes on a recommendation from here, and whilst they are good to walk in for a cycling shoe, the mavics are good to walk in for a walking shoe

Zippy's right. While a level of physical fitness is certainly required, whether you finish is largely goverened by your head. Set out believing you'll finish and with no other option or contingency in place and chances are you will. Go out doubting or with a headful of potential bailout options, it...

Just so I'm clear, you're querying your tyres being 1.3mm too narrow? I'll be sure to sneak a pea under your mattress and await the results.  It's more that they seem far smaller than my previous set (which got stolen so I can't compare the 2), I was more quoting the measured size for co...

Obscure tyre help
I've just received a new 2.4 Ardent for my Surly, and while it says 2.4 on the side, it seems much smaller than my previous ones and measures only 2.35" on 35mm Halo vapour rims. So my question is, would anyone with the same tyre on a similar rim be able to measure the sidewall to sidewall size...

The only alternative I've found is the Keela made army issue smock, which may well be the one you've tried. Other than that I've looked everywhere for an alternative and found nothing affordable  . the keela is a new one to me, this is the one i tried: https://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/a...
