Re: Priced out of mainstream mountain biking?

Using an online calculator it seems that £2250 is about £1500 with inflation from 1998 so it's not a million miles away. Pop along to Halfords and a grand gets you a Boardman hardtail with x9 or a full-susser with x7. I bought a Sunn Urge XC Un in 99/00. Full RRP for the team rep bike with xt was £1...

Re: Priced out of mainstream mountain biking?

While you can spend more than is strictly necessary mountain biking has never been cheaper for the performance. Remember Ringlé skewers at £50 a throw or RockShox Mag 20s for £350 with 50mm travel? £1000 buys you an amazing bike, either a cracking hardtail or a well performing full susser. Just do y...

Aren't they riveted rather than changeable rings though?
Chainreaction flog replacement rings so I hope not!

You can continue to follow Salsa's lead and put some toe straps/bungies around the fork/bag to hold it tight.

Re: Leg Coverings

Coldest ride I've done was Thetford WS1. 4 hours in the rain & Mud. I wore 3/4 Lycra & a pair of Lidl waterproof trousers cut off below the knee articulation. For £8 a pair they make for decent VFM versus Endura, etcs offerings. ;)

Re: Tubeless

I still carry a tube in case I rip the tyre. The goo generally does the job though.

I would always run tubeless where possible. Forgot the other advantage, running at 25psi feels grippier but less draggy than with tubes.

Re: Tubeless

Weight is generally less, I just use "normal" tyres and the tubeless tape can't weigh more than the regular rimtape. A couple of cups of goop must weigh less than a tube. After that puncture resistance is generally improved. A thorn stuck in the tyre will seal up, in a tube it'll pop it. I...

Re: Tubeless

The method in the link seems a lot of faff, could be fatbike tyres are more hassle? I use Roval tubeless tape (£10 roll is plenty for 10s of rims) and roval or superstarvalves (£6 or £7 a pair). The one thing I'd do differently from S8tannorm is try pumping it up before adding the fluid as if you ca...

If anyone is looking for somewhere to stay the night before Oswestry Travelodge can be had for £15! The Tripadvisor reviews aren't great but then I'm not sure that'll upset many of you....

Re: This might be a silly question

Every down item I've ever had has lost down to one degree or another. Might be worth a real close look over and check a seam hasn't split, etc. Is it possible to check the original weight to see if its lost a noticeable amount of filling.

Re: Tube size for 29 by 2.2 tyre

Oh, I just noticed the Schwalbe bit properly. The Schwalbe SV19 29er tubes are fine but avoid their super light tubes. They are paper thin! My puncture problems have been with Maxxis EXC Beavers.

Re: Tube size for 29 by 2.2 tyre

I've just ordered some tubes from on-one as I assume their tubes are made by maxxis like their tyres. I've been getting a puncture on every ride until I changed to maxxis.

Anyhow, I digress, they list two sizes of 29er tube widths and they're £2.50ish.
