Re: Talk to me about Velocity P35 rims.

Velocity P35 (35mm narrow, 535g,£66, fragile?) When I say dinged relatively easily, to be fair that's usually from a mis-timed hop/jump over rooty sections with about 18psi in a 2.4 Ardent, I'm 11.5-12st and not especially smooth. If I'm riding loaded or anywhere rocky I add PSI. They seem to have ...

the new Jones long ranger.
Would love to see one of those up close.

Singular Sam had a P35/Knard front combo on a Gryphon at the Spin show the other week, he said it works well enough. I'm tempted to try the tyre anyway and go for a rim / front wheel later.

Re: MYOG bar harnesses and bar bags with Jones Loops

I've used both a MYOG strap system (webbing sewn onto a ladder-H shape with pull clips fitted) and an older Revelate bar strap on Hs and loops. Both work well as long as you keep the roll fairly narrow, but I have truss forks that keep the roll off the head tube - as suggested above a simple tension...

Re: Rate my tarp

Anthony, that's good - looks like a better way to have both stability and leg room with a smaller tarp. I like the bike at the head-end as the frame bag's easily accessed so hadn't tried that one.

Rate my tarp

Been trying a few 'standard pitches' since giving up on the Ray Mears just-chuck-it-up-anywhere approach and looking for something that works independently of trees, fences etc. Used a wheel-tunnel as my standard bivi cover on a trip last year for a week plus and it was great. Trying out a similar s...

Re: Talk to me about Velocity P35 rims.

I don't think P35s are good vfm, the finish quality isn't that durable (my bike does get a fair amount of use tho) and they can be dinged relatively easily if you pinch the tyre, but what they do to tyre profile and pressures you can get away with makes them well worth it. I like them overall but wo...

Re: Buffalo bags.

I'm a big fan of Buffalo tops and tried a loose fleece liner inside my bivi bag last Sept, a cool Autumn night and it was ok, not cosy but not a bad night's sleep. 450-500g for the liner I used, so 800g for a buffalo all in one isn't too bad.

Re: Bivvy a month for 2013

4/5, or 5 in 5 if sneaking into an unlocked pump house near the dam in the Black Mountains counts as a bivi.. 'hobo living' maybe, bivi maybe not. But when it's that wet, found shelter trumps a tarp bivi! I got 5 days riding in by riding back to Swindon from home via the Ridgeway on thursday followe...

Re: 26' Race Kings

Used to have them on the back of my 26" SS. I liked them (have a few still in the garage looking for a home if you want to try them on the cheap, PM if so). Really fast but little cornering grip on anything damp or loose, to be expected really from a tread like that.

Re: Hello. Bearbones newbie - saddlebag question

Hello.. ) I wish I'd got a WC Tiger earlier, well recommended. Really good design, adaptable and more secure than the other std stuff-bag type I have. Maybe not the best for a huge load, but it's not the best place for a huge load either.

Re: Coping with extended wet, cold conditions - hands and fe

Useful stuff.. thanks. I do have to get off and walk at times, either SS-defeated or to warm up the feet, it works. I think all the usual things like good base layers, eating well etc I do already (lessons learned from outdoor experience in general). I followed a few tips here and found buffalo / sh...

Re: Your favorite alpkit goodie?

My frame bag, one of their early / pre-production try-out versions that's looking fresh after around 2000 miles of use and stood up to ham-fistedness that's wrecked a few rucksacs. MyTiMug - one for all, that and a popcan stove is all I use on short trips now. Their drybags also seem to be totally t...

Coping with extended wet, cold conditions - hands and feet

Wet, cold hands/feet can be crippling. I know how bad it can start to get and that nothing can keep you dry indefinitely, but after being particularly badly frozen for most of an 8hr ride this winter and getting a reminder of how fast it can happen when unprepared today, I wonder what good 'in case'...

WTD - Paul Comp hinged thumbie mounts or similar

Need a split/hinged clamp barend shifter mount, single or pair, with or without shifter units, not too fussed. To buy or can swap / PX for some Forge-SJS thumbie mounts in black, BNIB.

Cheers

Re: How much does your bike weigh?

Dunno what my steel Jones weighs.. it's 'reassuringly sturdy'. But the frame and forks aren't that heavy, 7.3lb. Spec varies and it weighs whatever the total is, I'm used to it and there's no pointless weight on it so I don't care / know. I guess 27lbs or so as a SS, 29lbs with gears at the back? My...

Re: Tyre Recommendations

2.5 is big but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I go for the biggest tyres I can if it's relatively firm ground, only going down to 2.2 in the wet. A bigger tyre can be used at a lower pressure for more comfort and lower rolling resistance. Makes more difference n a loaded bike than unloaded. The...

Cereal / oat bars, whatever has lower fat, or flapjack. Soreen. Brown bread jam butties. Eccles cakes. Dried dates. Chocolate raisins. Jelly Babies. In rough order of long>short term energy. Savoury things for 1, 2x a day on a long ride seems to be good. Had cravings for fatty protein on multi-day t...

The highlight of the trip was at 01:30 this morning when I found myself up in a tree in my pants armed with only a headtorch and leatherman as a huge male boar nibbled on my handlebars :) Great post.. I was woken up by a boar in France once, didn't know what it was at first, I moved, something larg...

Re: Placating the other half.

:) Could be worse Ray.. I went climbing in the Ecrin a few years ago. A simple, straight-forward route took us out of phone reception for a couple of days, as would most in that area. By the time we'd walked back to La Grave my mate's wife had called MR, French local police, the bureau de guides and...
