Re: The 1st Torino-Nice Rally, anyone?

Does anyone have any sources for detailed topographical maps (like our OS 1:50k or France's IGN equivalent) covering the Italian part of the route? Either digital or paper. Best I've found so far is the OSM with the contours add-in. I don't *need* any more than that, but I'm a sucker for traditiona...

Keeping feet properly warm

I have a neurological condition which means that I don't feel temperature properly in my feet, and when they get cold, they feel HORRIBLE, and it's really not good when they start to thaw out. It wasn't that cold today, but my feet were still getting a bit cold in overshoes / shoes / wool socks / co...

Re: route planning

The altitude and OSM routing functions seem to have stopped working on BikeHike, but you can fake the altitude thing by exporting and adding altitude using the GPS Visualizer website.

Anyone tried one of these? Seems to fold up which seems to be a key detail for this trip http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/mobile/tifosi-bike-bag/rp-prod35558 I used something similar Bristol <-> Nice a few years ago for my Inbred. 2/10, would not use again. Re: Overseas Route Planning

For the French Alps and beyond, this is probably the most useful starting point I've found, as it's basically a map-based meta site which aggregates lots of other route sites. Everything from individual sections of trail to multi-day trips, graded my technicality if the source site has the grading a...

+1 for a decent second-hand Saunders if you can get one... eBay is a good source. My sister and her husband have backpacked all over Scotland in all weathers and used to swear by Saunders until they were no longer available. The Jetpacker is a genuine (measured on my digital kitchen scales) 1.25kg, ...

Re: Dynamo hub USB device - have your say!

The IP67 connector is just to ensure the integrity of the device. If it happened to get dropped in a puddle or the bike dunked during a river crossing the device would survive. Anything plugged into it or stored in the same place would need to be protected separately. I would have thought a...

Re: Dynamo hub USB device - have your say!

2. USB connector. I've sourced an IP67 rated (1m submerged for 30 minutes*) connector that comes with a screw-on cover. It is more expensive that a standard USB but I like the security it gives against unexpected drownings. Obviously anything plugged into the USB may suffer... Won't a properly wate...

Re: Another Dynamo Q

The kLite mod is to put a 'booster' capacitor in series with the dynamo input. This acts in conjunction with the inductance of the dynamo coil to provide a boost in current at cerain speeds. You can either use a bipolar capacitor, or two electrolytics. Compare Circuits 2, 5 and 6 on this page to get...

Re: 29er+ wheelset

I know we slag mechs off and worry about damaging them but in reality that doesn't happen often and if it does they're fairly cheap / easy to replace. You say that, but I've had offs on my Hemlock several times this summer where I've landed the bike on its right-hand side in a relatively high (down...

Welsh forestry and wind farm tracks?

So what's the skinny with the Welsh forestry and wind farm tracks that a lot of folks here seem to ride? I've used some in the Brecon Beacons but not further north. Google Maps seems to have a lot of them marked, and you can obviously see them on the aerial photography, but what's the access like? O...
