Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...

Ian, that's just after the Doethie valley track turn isn't it? How's the sod of a climb up from the Chapel on the other side of the hill, similar rain damage I guess. BTW did you get my PM re parking/ camping? Dan, yes it's about 5-6 miles into the 100 route so if you need lights by then, you're in ...

Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...

Because the late start (10am) and the clocks altering the week before the event the nights will drop dark earlier at 19:54. I think you'll find it's the opposite, when the clocks go forward in the Spring, the evenings get lighter so, dependant on the weather, it should get dark at about 8pm rather ...

Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...

Could I throw a couple of resupply options into the mix. There's a reasonably big grocery shop in Ysbyty Ystwyth, not sure how late it closes on Saturday but might be doable for the quick ones. Also there's a shop in Staylittle which Stuart knows, we invaded it on a ride last year. Might be open on ...

Re: That there gravel race, what bike poll?

Part of the attraction of this event for me is pondering the fastest/most reliable permutations. Given a pretty good knowledge of the route, I think the 100 is a no brainer for a CX bike but having signed up for the 200, there are more questions than answers at the moment. If you're expecting all sm...

Or this link http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=3072459 for an overview of the route, most seem to ride East to West , you may encounter a lot of pushing if doing it the other way.

Re: TransPyr anyone....?

Hi Mountainbaker, My advice, given that I did the route finding for this trip and completed it in 11 days, is to look at this http://www.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/find.do?uom=mi&q=Transpirenaica&act=2%2C&from=20&to=30 which is on a site called Wikiloc. You will find this site has a wealth ...

Re: If there were a UK 'gravel race' ...

Bloody hell, that's nearly every forest road I've ever ridden in Mid Wales. Could be a bit rough for the CX bike with carbon wheels I've just built, the trail NE of Nant Y Moch is pretty rocky ;)

Handlebar Straps for Alpkit Airlok Extra

I've managed to get my hands on a few of these http://www.podsacs.com/accessories_beltsbuckles.html , the 50mm accessory belt, they are perfect for strapping the larger Alpkit drybags as they adjust from 550mm to 1 metre in length and have a really strong clip. They are brand new in their original pa...

Re: Bivvy a month for 2013

Ha, that's my local. Andy is a recent convert to cycling and comes out regularly with us. I asked him recently whether he knew you from fell running, seems you are a Dark Peak runner. I'm afraid the lure of a warm bed 200 yds down the road trumps bivvying at this time of year.

Re: Partial Frame Bags

I've got one of those Deuter bags, it's not particularly big, if you want something a bit bigger Rose Bikes in Germany sell an Extreme branded one which is about twice the volume and the same price as the Deuter, you need to watch the zip though, just returned the one I bought in the Summer but frie...

Re: Ultimate bike?

In defence of Ti, have you looked at Van Nicholas? I have a Redwood 29er with sliding dropouts, it's a 2011 model but unfortunately the latest models have standard dropouts but as far as I know they do a Rohloff compatible frame with EBB. I fitted mine with an Alfine 11 speed and a hub dynamo which ...

E mails removed, I didn't think there was anything private in the content but hey ho. Just to say that it would have been better if you had mentioned your preferences prior to the trip, maybe I'm too touchy. Also you gave the impression that the trails were non technical but given you only rode 2 of...

Re: TransPyr trip report

Having just read the comments about the lack of singletrack on the route and apparent soft option of using campsites, can I comment below. After considerable research, I found a published guide from a guy who had done a very similar route to the one we were attempting but in 16 days not the 12 we ha...

Re: Any POSITIVE experiences of Alfine11 hubs?

I've just ridden mine 1000km and 23500m of climbing offroad across the Pyrenees, the bike weighed 50+ lbs with camping gear and had a chainring giving a ratio way lower than Shimano recommend. I've found that in dirty conditions, the groove that the gear cable runs through can get mud in which alter...

Re: TransPyr anyone....?

Well we did it!! Back on the ferry with decent WiFi. We finished on Friday, a day ahead of schedule after a mega 125k 3400m climbing day. We totalled 23,694m of climbing and over 1,000k. A few issues, 4 punctures, 2 broken spokes, a bent chain and most seriously a fubared hope freehub. This meant a ...

Re: breakfast?

I'm trying to sort out exactly this issue for my upcoming Spanish trip. I've tried making Oats So Simple in my jetboil but it just coats the inside with porridge, there are various recipes that mix the oats with milk powder and seem to work with adding boiling water but I've not tried them yet. You ...

Re: Looking for a long narrow drybag

Looking at the Ortlieb ones, they measure the filled diameter at 190mm, I need an empty layflat dia of 180mm which gives a filled dia of around 120-130mm. I think I may be looking for something that doesn't exist.

Looking for a long narrow drybag

Hello Campers, following the Monkii see thread, I've come up with a cunning plan involving using a couple of these http://shinglas.com/images/roof_components/water/homut.jpg on my forks but can't find a long narrow drybag to hold my Exped mat. It needs to have a layflat width of 180mm and length of ...
