Re: Line-Loks v Figure 9's for guylines?

Linelocks look a far neater IMO. Although unlikely, at least when the linelocks are in place they can't come off and get lost.

1.5mm dyneema and linelocks, simples.

Re: MKettle / Meths Experiment.

Plus that's your door step, it doesn't count as real world testing :D The Caldera is reputably one of the most efficient stoves around but even that needs 22-25ml on meths for a 700ml rolling boil. Interestingly when I trod on my burner I tried a top-jet red bull stove inside the cone as a replaceme...

Re: Cautionary tale

Good tip,

The only time I have been to Wasdale was at 5am riding the c2c with the scary prospect of a mahoosive hikeabike, alone, up to Styhead then over to Rosset Pike fully loaded with 5 days of kit and food, having only been to the lakes once before and with no idea what to expect!!

Re: MKettle / Meths Experiment.

If that's accurate, even the 800ml boil alone on 20ml of meths is pretty impressive  I'm currently making a caldera burner copy after treading on the original :? It's a chimney style burner and is quite a lot more tricky to build than the normal pop can stoves. I actually took the calipers ar...

Re: PHD Summer Sale

For general winter use and if weight and packsize are an important part of your choices then the minimus is an absolutely brilliant jacket and compared to other high street brands the spec. for the money is actually hard to beat (unless you get lucky with a good discount). If packed tighly it stuffs...

Re: PHD Summer Sale

I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for any 900fill garments to ever make it into their regular sales :(

The Minim 300 really does make for a fantastic 2-3 season bag especially seeing as the Alpkit PD400 is somewhat awol.

Not at all, I find it perfect for big hilly rides when loaded up. SS is never going to be perfect for all conditions, if I know I need to make fast progress I'll put the 1x7 on. Surly Stainless ring, Surly cog, KMC 610HX chain. The Surly stainless chainrings are brilliant, have used them for years. ...

Re: Groundsheets?

What amazes me is that it weighs 178g for quite a lot of quite sturdy fabric. Why can't I buy a jacket that uses far less fabric for far less weight and an even smaller pack size??

I got mine for £50 earlier in the year and it has seen some good service up to date. I'm on it's limit height wise.

Re: Singlespeed Setup

I tend to run 36/18 for 2:1 as I find that 18T cogs last longer than 16T cogs. Heavier though ;) Currently set as 35/22 for bikepacking in proper hills

Gear inches come into play when your comparing gear ratios between different sized wheels. Ie 2:1 on a 26" bike is different to that of a 29er.

Re: Groundsheets?

I'm hoping the recent purchase of a full length neoair will negate that decision of needing to take the polycro groundsheet or not.

When the ground is absolutely sodden, trying to get changed into dry evening clothing on just a short mat is always a game!

Re: Lets Pretend ... Dream Kit.

I did notice on your Flikr pictures that it's packed size was quite big to say how incredibly light it is. I was experimenting with the siltarp over the weekend again, but even after 2hrs and about 20m of bits of string I still couldn't create a shape that was any better than the hooped tunnel one I...

Re: Lets Pretend ... Dream Kit.

Looks good Ian, do you know what shape you're planning on building if your using a pole?

What size/shape is it for that weight?

Big question is, has it met your 1G per £ weight saving criteria over the Siltarp?!!

Re: MYOG ... Pot Cosy.

Nice one Stuart, I have been meaning to do similar for a while. Usually I brew about 650ml of water in the morning, using about 350ml for porridge then the remaining 300ml in the mug to brew a coffee. By the time I have waited for the porridge to hydrate and eaten it, my coffee has gone cold. I do e...

Re: Yeti Passion one ... Silly light sleeping bag.

Packsize doesn't look any better than the PHD. Holding my Minim Ultra up to the light it is scary how little 900 fill down is needed for it's warmth. I can't see the point in the £££ for how little warmth it offers tbh. You could make a 100g sleeping bag that copes with 18'c if you didn't put any do...

B-H Lakes Stag Trip

So finally after much apprehension my stag-trip came round and I'm pleased to say I survived the ordeal! I had no idea where we were going or what we were doing whilst we were there, it was all arranged by my best man so it was quite an adventure. We had an absolutely fantastic time, with varying le...

As Ian, been using the 350g PHD bag since March and have never been cold whilst companions have. Since April I have been sleeping in only Lifa base layers with a 3/4 mat and been toasty. Temps will need to drop close towards zero before the winter bag comes out.

Dont forget your choice of sleeping mat can also play a big part to keeping warm during cold temperatures.

I'll be taking my Alpkit PD800 which is a lovely budle of joy that fits into an 8L drybag with ease. It's either that or my PHD +8C bag so I have no choice anyway!

Stuart, you're both amazing and very very annoying

I'm going to resist. I must resist.

1)It has been superseded with the Ozo, which with the drop tail is more biking friendly.
2)I'm still chipping away at the creditcard to pay off my XTR brakes last month.
